baruch spinoza

1632 — 1677

Dutch philosopher of Sephardi Portuguese origin. Laid the groundwork for Enlightenment rationalism and modern biblical criticism.

Core Thesis

God and Nature are one substance—there is no supernatural realm separate from the natural world. Everything that exists is a mode or expression of this single infinite substance. Freedom comes not from free will but from understanding necessity.

key ideas

Deus sive Natura

God or Nature—they are the same thing. Pantheism: the universe itself is divine, not created by an external deity.

Conatus

The striving of each thing to persist in its own being. The fundamental drive underlying all existence.

Adequate Ideas

True knowledge comes from understanding things through their causes, seeing them as necessary rather than contingent.

Intellectual Love of God

The highest form of knowledge and blessedness—understanding the universe sub specie aeternitatis, under the aspect of eternity.

The Excommunicated

Spinoza was excommunicated from the Jewish community at age 23 for his unorthodox views. He lived simply, grinding lenses for a living, refusing academic positions to preserve his intellectual freedom.
